Dr. Hope can work with you to address emotional and behavioural difficulties interfering with your quality of life to better help you thrive. Depending on your goals, targets of individual therapy may include decreasing experiences of depression, addressing anxiety and avoidance keep you stuck, and addressing ineffective coping patterns for coping with overwhelming emotions. Dr. Hope works from the premise that change follows acceptance and understanding of why you are facing your unique challenges in the first place. Therefore, therapy may also target increasing self-acceptance, and decreasing self-criticism. Therapy begins with an assessment to better understand the difficulties you are facing, and this assessment guides Dr. Hope in recommending an evidence-based treatment.

Dr. Hope offers a variety of evidence-based treatment, including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) for emotional regulation difficulties, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for mood and anxiety disorders, Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and mindfulness-based interventions.

  • Decreasing avoidance, and increasing values congruent behaviour (e.g., return to work or school; decreasing isolation)

  • Accessing inner resilience in coping with strong emotions

  • Boundary setting, enhancing self-respect and quality of close relationships

Inquire with Dr. Hope about joining the waitlist for DBT skills training and whether this group may be an effective fit for you. Skills training introduces new ways of coping with emotions, tolerating and decreasing distress, improving relationships and communication, and increasing mindful awareness.

Therapy begins with a one to two-hour assessment to better understand your history, challenges you are facing, as well as your strengths. Using both collaborative discussion of your experiences and objective assessment measures, Dr. Hope will form a working diagnosis of your difficulties to guide scientific decision making in which treatment may serve you best, while taking your unique history, personality, and goals into account.

In light of the pandemic and in consideration of changing public health recommendations, Dr. Hope may recommend online services for all local clients, and will keep you updated on these recommendations. For clients in remote areas of Vancouver Island or barriers to accessing in-person services, please inquire with Dr. Hope about planning for online video therapy services.

For individuals with loved one's struggling with emotional difficulties, borderline personality disorder, anxiety or depression. You may inquire with Dr. Hope about booking a "family consult" in order to develop skills for supporting your loved ones, responding to unwanted behaviour, setting boundaries compassionately, and/or plan for managing your own self-care.
